Judges: George Allen (Ross) & John Ahern (Whistler)
Referee: E.R. Johnston
Attendance: 'Large Audience'
1 - 'World Championship' - Mixed Styles (Catch-as-Catch-Can x 2/Collar & Elbow x 2/Graeco-Roman) - Three out of Five Falls - For $250 (a side)

Notes:
Announced that Whistler was late getting here due to an accident to Muldoon, Whistlers backer, he sends a telegram to explain and says will be there today with money.
The first bout was catch-as-catch-can and after a struggle, Ross gave up and gave the fall to Whistler.
Whistler decided in turn he would automatically forfeit both Collar & Elbow bouts, Ross protested, but the referee decided it was Whistler's right to.
The fourth bout was catch-as-catch-can.
The fifth bout was due to be Graeco-Roman. Ross stated that three points would have to touch for a fall, this was disputed as only being two points needed. The referee read the rules as printed in a newspaper and it confirmed two points. Ross then pointed out that the rules had stated the bouts to take place between 8 and 12 and as it was past 12 the match was off. The referee consulted the timekeeper who declared it was 2 minutes to 12 and the match could continue and if Ross refused he would be declared the loser and receive no stakes. Ross put on his coat and walked out.
The Daily Globe says the match was a "Miserable fiasco."

From an interview with Duncan C. Ross in 1893.
OCTOBER 24, 1882 (TUESDAY)
"The fame of Donald Dinnie, the herculean Scotchman, has been drooping for some time, and the glory of providing the herculean champion appeared likely to depart from Scotia. Another of her sons, however, in the person of Duncan C. Ross, who has before been noticed in this column, has issued a challenge, with a staked thousand dollars, daring any man to meet him in either America or Europe. The following are the items which Mr. Ross proposes shall form the programme for the athletic championship of the world:- Throwing the heavy hammer, 16lb.; throwing light hammer, 12lb.; putting heavy stone, 21lb.; putting light stone, 14lb.; throwing heavy weight from side, 56lb.; throwing heavy weight for height; tossing the caber, 205lb.; running high jump; running long jump; standing high jump; standing long jump; hitch and kick; running 100 yards; hurdle race, 120 yards; 220 yards; wrestling, Scotch; collar and elbow side hold in harness. Surely this is enough to try the capabilities of any athlete." - Exeter & Plymouth Gazette Daily Telegrams
