It is acknowledged that Owens is disputed as champion by James McLaughlin.
The belt that Owens wears is "A solid band of silver about four inches wide, richly chased, with a gold clasp in the shape of a shield, ornamented in the same manner, and bearing the following inscription: 'Silver Belt Presented by Citizens of New-York. Champion of the World.'
There are said to be set conditions for the holder of the belt which are: "The holder must accept all challenges, with right to name time, place, and amount of stakes, within three months of a challenge, but if he should allow three months to pass without decisive contest the belt to pass from him to the challenger. All contests shall be at collar and elbow. The belt must be held by one person for five years against all comers, and if so held shall become his property."
