World Graeco-Roman Championship Tournament: Final Day
Promoter: Heinrich Neimann
Circus Busch, Hamburg, Germany
Referee: Peters
1 - Dirk van den Berg def. Heinrich Winzer
2 - George Hackenschmidt def. Heinrich Eberle
Notes:
This tournament finishes today. It started on January 1, 1901.
No placement for the World Heavyweight Graeco-Roman Championship Tournament.
Eberle gave up against Hackenschmidt. He declared himself defeated due to illness. Up until this point he was a top star in Germany. Those in attendance were stunned and could not understand the decision. They shouted "Fraud" and demanded their money back. Riots broke out at the circus and the police had trouble in restoring order. It was not the first time there had been trouble during the tournament and the police banned it from finishing. All the shows were cancelled and that is why there is no placement for the heavyweight class. Often people wrongfully claim this as Hackenschmidt's first World Heavyweight Graeco-Roman Championship Tournament victory.

JANUARY 24, 1901 (THURSDAY)
