Two Falls to One (F1 FG 00:33:00 - F2 CO 00:03:00 - F3 FG 00:25:00 - C 01:01:00)

Notes:
Olsen is referred to ss the Southern Champion on and off in the lead up to the match.

The billing changes within local papers between world and American title. I believe the few times "world" was used it was accidental though.

The first event name is from the Asheville advertisements. The second from the Greensboro.

On March 22 it is reported there have been out-of-town reporters arriving in the city in preparation for the match. John O. Seys, of the News published in Chicago, Illinois, and  T.K. Lynch, of The Morning Telegraph published in New York are the two mentioned by name.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Harvey Pollock, representative of Madison Square Garden, arrived for the match on March 21.

It's estimated the day before the match that 400 enthusiasts will come from Chicago and New York City for the match.

"Regarding the validity of Gotch's championship title, it is only necessary to know that he beat Jenkins three times out of their five meetings.

...

Olsen's claim will be settled one way or the other tomorrow night, a fact which really makes the Olsen-Gotch affair the most important contest of the kind ever fought in the south. In fact, this is the first time since 'Jim' Corbett won the heavyweight championship from John L. Sullivan at New Orleans, La., in 1892, that a southern athlete has had the chance to achieve top-notch wrestling or boxing honors.

...

'I want strength and weight more than anything else for Gotch,' said Olsen, 'I intend to rest and go lightly from now on.'" - Citizen Times

The local Asheville paper said in their March 22 edition that $400 had been made in advanced sales tickets. The March 22 edition of the Raleigh News & Observer, printing a special from an Asheville paper on March 21 states more than $3,000 have been made through advance.

A direct line of communication from Asheville and New York was set up by Manager Calvert of the Western Union via a wire system set up on the stage with two operators to utilize the telegraph instruments.

In the end the line worked fine with bulletins going out and coming in all night. They were handled by Geo. W. Calvert, P.G. White and Edward Williams. It's said this is the first time it'd ever been done out of this city.

There was talk of the match being called off the night prior to it due to the rule being set that footholds were to be barred. Gotch claimed he never saw the contract until last Saturday as his manager had dealt with it. He goes on to say he would not have agreed had he as in a championship match Police Gazette rule should be used.

Olsen's manager, McDonald, of New Orleans, said the match is off if Gotch is not going to stick to the contract, which Gotch had declared he would not be due to his manager authorizing it without Gotch's consent.

In the end Olsen said he'd wrestle Gotch however Gotch liked as many people had paid a lot of money to be here for the bout.

It's reported on the day of the match that, "By far the largest house ever attracted for an affair of this sort in the South, unless it be one of the famous pugilistic encounters in New Orleans in the days of the old Olympic Club."

Over $%00 worth of tickets had been sold by the time the March 23 paper was printed.

It was announced on March 23 that all free tickets were suspended and only paid tickets would be admitted.

Also announced on that day weas a bar on the crowd hissing during the contests by Chief Police Bernard.

On the day of the match the Asheville paper printed:

"Olsen's Statement.

'This match means much to me. To win means the American Championship at my belt. All I can say is that I intend to put up my best fight there is in me. Should I win, I shall at once challenge either Jenkins or Hackenschmidt in Madison Square Garden, New York. I believe Gotch to be the real champion and if I can beat him, I can win from all others. I am feeling finely and go into this fight in perfect condition and will have no excuse after it's all over.'"

And:

"Statement From Frank Gotch.

'I intend to win, I feel that I can win. I know that all my recent matches have been toy affairs compared to going up against this Asheville bou. Olsen is a tough preposition and I am not underrating him. All I ask the people of Asheville is that I get a fair, square show and if beaten there will be no complaint from me, I am stronger and older than Olsen and will win thereby."

Atleast 500 out of town fans are said to be here for the match.

Olsen was clearly the fan favorite. Even though those who bet, bet against him, doing so because Olsen advised them to.

How openly the betting took place was a source of disappointment for some people as the aldermen had been promised it would be squashed out in return for lower taxes on wrestling.

It's said in the end it was the biggest crowd ever to be packed into the Grand Opera House. The listed attendance figures come from the same newspaper in the same article.

Folllowing the match Gotch said, "I want to say that Mr. Olsen is as good a man as I ever met. He is the first man to win a fall from me in a year and the second in three years. I want to explain how it was that I won both falls with locks that were originally barred in agreement. I did not want to take chances on my committing a foul unintentionally and it could not be a championship match with that hold barred. I got a thousand dollars to come here so I had everything to win and nothing to lose but I would not lose for ten thousand dollars. I am willing to meet Olsen with footlocks barred, winner to take all. I know it will be a long and hard match, but I am the boy to chance it."

Olsen promptly accepted Gotch's challenge. He said, "I have not wrestled since the Link match. Of course Gotch is a great man he has been making monkeys of the men he has met to the east. He is so awfully strong and clever."

A telegram was also read by the referee which challenged the winner.

Olsen also assured the crowd he would be keeping his home in Asheville.

[It becomes clear now that Perrelli's earlier result with Pagos was indeed taken from the records]

The newspaper says that only 18 men remain from the remaining 29. [I make 22 left based on the rulings mentioned in day 1]

APRIL 19, 1906 (THURSDAY)

World Heavyweight Championship / International Graeco-Roman Tournament: Day 4
Promotion: Canadian Athletic Club
Promoter: George Kennedy
Sohmer Park, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
1 - Gonthier def. Roumougen
2 - Delivuk def. Holrigg

9 - Frank Gotch def. Emile Maupas
(00:03:00)
10 - Consolation Match
Labarbe def. Hedger

Note:
This was put on due to the quick finish in the Gotch-Maupas bout.

As Busch left and Perrelli entered, Perrelli "playfully" slapped Busch on the cheek. A fight between the two nearly broke out as a result of that, but Dr. Gadbois put a stop to it.

The Gazette states there have been seventeen eliminations. [I make it 13 based on the rulings in day 1]

The paper also lists that five men have qualified as finalists and there are eight men who will take part in semi-finals to decide the other finalists.

[By process of elimination this means we can confirm the others who have been eliminated. No reason has been given why they are no longer participating - Still only makes it fifteen eliminated with thirteen remaining]

APRIL 20, 1906 (FRIDAY)

World Heavyweight Championship / International Graeco-Roman Tournament: Day 5

(00:24:50)
5 - Apollo def. Maupas
(00:30:00-)
6 - Perrelli Vs. Pietro,
Time-Limit Draw (00:30:00)

Notes:
The Gazette says that when Roumageon drew with Gustavidson it put him out the tournament. He hadd already been eliminated though, so I think it meant Gonthier as he is not mentioned? Although, could have been Pagos as he also does not appear and is now eliminated.

For the next day: "If there are four winners the four will be divided into two pairs, the last two winners to meet to settle first and second place. If any draws are wrestled they will be to have run to a finish."

The final eight are on equal standings going forward:
1 - Frank Gotch Vs. Ch. Pietro
2 - Carl Bursch Vs. J. Perrelli
3 - Emile Maupas Vs. Yankee Rogers
4 - Delivuk Vs. Apollo

3 - Rogers Vs. Maupas,
Time-Limit Draw (00:30:00)
4 - Pietro def. Gotch
(00:00:30)

Notes:
The attendance figure is what the St. John Daily Sun listed, however, I'm pretty sure it's a typo.

After his loss Busch initially resigns from the competition saying he is going home. Pagos was going to be added to tomorrow's card if Busch did go home.

Gotch-Pietro: "The bout was the finale to a red-hot evening's work, but it lasted only logn enough to get the crowd yelling. Gotch walked over to Pietro, rushed him to the ropes. Pietro got a front waist-hold and Frank landed on his hands, but skipped to safety. Again they clinched, and Pietro got a back waist-hold, when Frank landed on the mat. Landed hard. Was it a flying fall or a pin fall? Certainly Pietro let him got at once - and walked out of the arena."

Gadbois refused to give a verdict on the finish. He left it to the judges to make a decision.

While the judges deliberated over what to do Gotch waited in the ring. Pietro meanwhile left the ring, the locker room and the whole building.

After the decision was made final people passed comment including:
 - Gadbois thought it was a flying fall.
 - Delivuk thought it was a clean fall.
 - Roumageon thought it was a clean fall.
 - Maupas thought it was a flying fall.
 - Mr. MacDonald, noted referee & athlete, commented "He should not have decided himself. That's what a referee is for."
 - Gotch said, "If falls like that count, I've won forty like it since the tournament began. I'll forfeit $100 if I can't throw Pietro in three minutes."

Gotch played with his man for about forty minutes, in order to give the spectators a wrestling exhibition, and finished by picking his opponent up bodily and throwing him off of the platform."

There was also an automobile parade. Gotch, Burns and the Mayor, Hansen, all rode in George Phillips' American car at the head of the parade. The car carried a large American flag.
