Part of a larger article about the state of current circuses:
"As to the 'Belphegots' of reality, without aspersing their morality, it can not be denied that they have a somewhat lax code of business arrangments. Among the wrestlers for instance most of the apparently bona fide single combats and ostentatious invitation of the athlete at a fair to measure his powers with any bystander in the circus are simple shams. Those who have looked behind the scenes do not hesitate to declare that 'all the matches of that kind are conventional, the antagonists settling beforehand which of them has to be finally thrown.' Again, as in the case of the haute ecole, the ignorant public is unable to distinguish between the fraud and the reality, and offers no objections. The professional wrestlers recognize two sorts of combats, the serious and the conventional. The latter is, on the whole, the more interesting, as it is never brutal, and, the result being prearranged, it affords their special merits at their best. The outsider who noisily claims to strip and enter the lists is hardly ever anything but a confederate. If he should happen to be a genuine amateur the professional athlete deals gently with him and lets him down kindly, but in the course of a year's wanderings from village to town this case may not occur once.
It is now some eighteen or twenty years since the masked athlete first made his appearance and excited considerable interest; the originator of the idea made his first debut in the ring of the Rue Le Peletier in Paris, and was in turns said to be Prince Jerome Napoleon, a well known doctor, and a fashionable and fast young nobleman; he was in reality a young soldier born at Marseilles, who rapidly made a name in his profession, and when celebrated went to America, where he settled. This man, Christol by name, may be said to have been the founder of a long line of nomadic artists of both sexes, who are seen daily now in our streets, their faces concealed under thick veils of slouched hats, wearing disfiguring cloaks, and supposed to belong to all walks of life, from the ranting preacher to the ballad singer, from the tumbler to the lady piano player, who, thanks to their mysterious garb, win more coins from recalcitrant spectators than the swarthy Italian, who, with his bronzed face exposed, grinds his perfunctory organ and never receives a penny." - Daily Globe
