"Henry L. Becker of Hesperia died of a combination of ailments brought on by excessive training for athletic sports. He was an agricultural college senior, and was the ebst athlete in the institution. He trained hard, but not discreetly. Last year he was injured in a wrestling match, but upon recovering, engaged in athletics as earnestly as before. He was 27 years old."

Hodge claimed Merrifield choked him and therefore bit him in retaliation. Hodge then swung at a bystander and missed. The bystander held him and who know what would have happened if Sheriff Kallander and his policemen had not been there as the crowd had jumped up from their seats when Hodge threw a punch ready to attack.
