"Sampson Redivivus - Yesterday forenoon, Mr. Perley K. Putnam, a young man raised at Sackett's Harbor, N.Y. carried upon his back from the corner of State and Congress streets to the Wind Mill, Sea-street, nearly one mile, three thousand Spanish dollars in a bag, weighing one hundred and eighty one pounds, upon a bet of twenty dollars. He did more: he carried them up one pair of stairs, and down again, and then offered to carry them back again, on a bet of the same amount; and this not being accepted, he offered to bet one hundred dollars that no man could be produced that could then put him his back. Putnam is truckmao, and weighs two hundred and seven pounds. We hear he challenges the whole State to produce a man that can overcome him at wrestling." - Newbern Spectator
