JANUARY 5, 1898 (WEDNESDAY)
Oakland, California
"The new regustration laws of the A.A.U. are now in operation. They give to the members of the Committee all the powers that were formerly vester in the Board of Governors and subcommittees. Each and every member of the committee in his own district is supreme. He has the right to sanction games, schedule games fo A.A.U clubs, suspend athletes, reinstate athletes, try all cases of infractions of the rules, and to solicit and receive applications for registration from athletes. According to a recent decision of the committee, all athletes who apply for registration now will receive cards to March 1, 1899. The cards are now in possession of the chairman. The registration cards this year will entitle the athlete to admission to all championship meetings of the A.A.U., and all sectional association championships. For instance, the registration cards issued from now on will admit the holder to the Gymnastic Championships, Boxing and Wrestling Championships, Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Billiard Championships, Basket Ball and Handball Championships, and other important events. It will be necessary, however, for the athletes to have the [new?] 1898 card to obtain these priviliges, therefore it will be to the advantage of the registered athletes who are now on the books and desire to retain their numbers to apply for renewal at once. Applications for renewal should be sent ot the member of the committee in the districts where the athletes reside. Track athletes, gymnasts, basket-ball players, and all other athletes competing in amateur events will be required to register. The following is a list of the members of the committee, with addresses:
Metropolitan Association; Bartow S. Weeks, 100 Broadway, New York.
Atlantic Association; John W. Kelley Jr., Box 471, Woodbury, N.J.
New England Association; Wm. H. Plummer, Worcester City Guards, Wocester, Mass.

"Death of a Noted Wrestler.
John Pearce, at one time champion Cornish wrestler of the United States and England, died recently. Pearce resided in Ishpeming for several years. He left here [Mining] about sixteen years ago, after making a big record as a Cornish wrestler. His last match here was at the old ball park out near Park street, when he walked off with first prize, throwing all the best wrestlers present. He went from ehre to his old home in England, and for several years after downed all comers in the Cornish style of wrestling. Many of the old timers here remember Pearce quite well. Some of his friends here yet say that he was one of the best, if not the best, man that ever donned a wrestling jacket in this or any other country."
