Notes:
"Some wrestling between Chinese then ensued; but there appeared few competitors for the honor of the ring, and a more sordid and uninteresting batch of athletics perhaps never before exhibited; only a single couple displayed their prowess-but there was not the slightest exhibition of skill in their performance-and nothing in the style in which the victory was won elicited applause." - Free Press & Mercantile Advertiser

"An All Nations' Olympiad
The American people, and the citizens of Chicago especially, whose push, restless energy, and enterprise are being developed to the full in the coming World's Fair, are, it seems, about to forestall us in the grand tournament contemplated and set on foot by Mr. J. Astley Cooper. His, however, is an Anglo-Saxon Olympiad for all branches of English-speaking populations. The American tournament in all branches of sport is open to all nations for the championship of the world. It may be premised that in almost any competition in branches of sport, among civilised or barbarous communities, those belonging to the great Anglo-Saxon race would come off the victors.
Englishmen, their descendants and offshoots, enjoy a pre-eminence in this regard. Still in the All Nations' Olympiad about to take place at Chicago it might so happen that athletes other than those belonging to the Anglo-Saxon race may run us very hard. In certain games, such as wrestling and running long distances, the Japanese and certain of the peoples in India would run us very hard hard. To carry out the All Nations' Olympiad in its entirety, it would of course be necessary to bring to Chicago representative athletes from every country. We shall see whether this can be done. In the meantime Mr. J.E. Sullivan, the secretary of the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, has written to Mr. J. Astley Cooper suggesting the desirableness of the movement above referred to, and the latter is understood to have replied that the gathering is worthy of support. Many nobleman and gentlemen in the British islands have also given their approbation to the undertaking, and the leading English amateur associations are following suit." - Straits Times Weekly Issue

"The illustrations descriptive of the incidents connected with the Spanish-American War, are very interesting. Among other series of pictures, those especially good are a thief chased by a bobby, a conjuror who performs some smart tricks, and a wrestling match between two individuals of immense proportions"
