"The Wrestling Champions
To the Editor of the People's Journal.
Sir, - Who is champion wrestler? There can not be two champions at the same thing at the same time. Captain D.C. Ross was in Aberdeen latley claiming to be champion mixed wrestler. G.M. Ross claims the same title. D.C. Ross, immediately after the late match in Dundee between G.H. Johnstone and G.M. Ross, challenged them both offering to throw them both the same evening. That looked like business, and G.M. Ross and Johnstone must put up or shut up. For myself, I would like to see who is champion at each style, as it sometimes happens that champion at all styles is not champion in any one style. Why not have
A Wrestling Tournament
and fight out each style by itself. Then let all who claim to be champions enter in each style, and let the winner of most falls from beginning to end be all-round champion. In addition to D.C. Ross and G.M. Ross, G.H. Johnstone, and Gunner Nicol (all Scotsmen), Professor Bauer, the French champion, and J. Daly, Irish champion. These with Connor (who is matched at present with G.M. Ross) and G. Steadman, the English Cumberland style champion, should make a fine all-round fight for top honours. Wrestling is a thing that is too little practised in Scotland, and the present is a good time to put it on a beter basis. We cannot have a lot of champions at everything. Let them be sifted out, and show us who is really a champion at any style and in all styles.
