1874
OCTOBER 1874
OCTOBER ??, 1874 (????)
Circus Suhr, Bucharest, Romania
Attendance: "Filled"
1 - "The Great Unknown" def. Jules Rigal
Notes:
The proprietor of the circus had announced a week earlier that Rigal's open challenge had been accepted by "a gentleman who, wishing to preserve a strict incognito, would appear."
Speculation ran rampant over who the athlete could be. One popular theory was that Prince Stourdja, a Moldavian nobleman with herculean strength was said wrestler.
This was the unknown's first match.
The unknown wore a mask.
For the next several nights in succession the unknown continued to appear due to the great success his performances were garnering.
On his (unscheduled) last night with the circus the masked wrestler narrowly escaped "being ripped to pieces" by those in attendance.
A member of the circus let slip that the man under the mask was not royalty or anyone special at all.
He was simply a clown from the circus.
The whole troupe, manager and all, had to "fly for their lives" to avoid serious injury in a quickly escalating riot.
It's reported that if the police were not quick to put an end to tumult, the whole circus would most likely have been destroyed.
