"SAY ZBYSZKO IS IN BAD SHAPE
Buffalo, May 31.—When Zbyszko tackles Frank Gotch in Chicago tomorrow night for the catch-as-catch-can championship of the world there will not be much Buffalo money bet on the mighty Pole’s chances. This is due to word received directly from the big foreigner himself.
It has been persistently rumored about town for the past few days that Zbyszko in private advices to friends among his countrymen here, has complained of not being in the best of condition. He did not say outright that it would be unwise to wager on him, but all his statements tended make it appear as if this interpretation was what he intended.
In a recent letter to a Black Rock business man named Metus, a countryman and fast friend of Zbyszko, the great wrestler complained of suffering from a serious attack of boils, and a mysterious pain in his back, which he thought would militate against his chances with Gotch. He said the attack of boils was an aggravated one and he did not expect to recover before the date of the match.
All this was capable of but one interpretation, and the tip has gone, none too quietly around among the Polish sportsmen, who up to the time of these advices from Zbyszko, were willing and eager to back their countryman. Since the receipt of these letters there has been an absolute dearth of Zbyszko money and the only wagers the big foreigner will carry when he faces Gotch will be those made a long time ago, when the big fellow was upsetting all his challengers as ninepins." - The Gazette
