"Wrestling Combine Formed
Montreal, Through George Kennedy, Included In Big Circuit
Cincinnati, February 1.---If plans of several local sporting men do not miscarry, Cincinnati will in the near future become a wrestling center second to no city in this country. Jack Curley, the well-known fight manager and promoter of all kinds of athletic affairs, arrived in the city yesterday and soon was busy consulting local sporting men over the wrestling situation in Cincinnati. Curley is secretary of the Empire Athletic Association, which was recently formed for the good of the mat game. The Association controls the leading wrestling clubs in America and a mat artist barred from the organization for wrong-doing of any kind finds himself unable to secure engagements which would pay him in remain in the game.
Joe Coffey, matchmaker for the Empire Athletic club, of Chicago, Jim Scoville of Kansas City, Sandy Griswold, of Omaha, Earl Ruben of Des Moines, and George Kennedy, of Montreal, are the members of the Empire Athletic Association. Each one of these gentlemen named in matchmaker of the club in his own city, and Jack Curley, Silvy Ferrell, Izzy Herk, Dave Porteous and Claude Johnson, act as a consulting board.
Curley, Ferrell and Herk are connected with Joe Coffey, Dave Porteous and Claude Johnson are partners of Scoville at Kansas City.
Said Curley last night: “The Empire Athletic Association is not in any sense a trust. Each club is allowed to offer its own purses and there is no agreement to hold down any matchmaker from making a big offer, either in the way of a guarantee or percentage. If Kansas City feels like offering 90 per cent of the gross receipts for a match, their matchmaker has a perfect right to do so. If Chicago offers a $10,000 purse for Gotch to meet Yussiff Mahmout, any of the other clubs, although members of the Empire Athletic Association, can outbid the offer if they so choose.
“Only one thing is binding in the Association, and there is no appeal from it. If a wrestler is billed to appear and has signed articles to that effect, he must carry out his contract or
be barred from ever appearing before any of the clubs of the Association. If the majority of the sporting editors in any city write up a match as looking shady the wrestler blamed for doing wrong will never again be given a match. In plain words, the Empire Athletic Association is in existence to protect the public that supports the game, and will not tolerate any wrongdoing in the game. The idea is simply copied from the rules of the turf associations and baseball bodies, and will be strictly enforced.”
Speaking of the wrestling game Curley said that the game never was in a healthier condition, and that the timely arrival of Mahmout and the way he has toppled over every grappler of note has worked in favor of mat shows, and when Mahmout meets Frank Gotch, a match which will most likely be staged the latter part of March, the biggest crowd that ever assembled for a wrestling show will greet the wrestlers." — The Gazette

" Kenny In The Balkans
Promoter Is Still On The Hunt For Wrestling Champion
According to post cards received here yesterday George Kennedy, the local wrestling promoter, is still on his hunt for a man good enough to defeat Frank Gotch. Kennedy had been four days up in the Balkans when he wrote. He had a party with him made up of two soldiers, a wrestler and an interpreter. For two nights the party had been sleeping out in the open. Kennedy states that he has met some good men, but not the right one as yet." - The Gazette

"Has Champion Wrestler
George Kennedy Says He Secured Real Find In Balkans
In a letter to The Gazette from Constantinople, George Kennedy announces briefly that he has returned from the mountains, and had with him a number of wrestlers, one of whom, he was confident, would prove a real champion. The Montreal promoter did not state what his future plans were, but it is likely he will be back in Montreal before very long. The letter was dated October 15th.
Mustapha Mehmedoff, the Turk that Kennedy sent over before he left France, will be given a chance to show his worth in a match here this week. He will meet Lundin, the Swede, at catch-as-catch-can style at Sohmer Park next Friday night. The match will be best two out of three falls." - The Gazette

"Wrestler Luttbeg Left Hotel, But Did Not Reach Sohmer Park
Crowd Got Money Back
Promoters were Kept busy for over an hour paying off 2,000 spectators
Max Luttbeg, who once wrestled here as “The Unknown,” took on a new role as “The Mysterious” when he failed to turn up at Sohmer Park last night to keep an engagement with Eugene Tremblay, the local champion. Wrestlers billed for Montreal have before missed connections with the city. In Luttbeg’s case, however, there was real mystery last night, for the Cincinnati wrestler reached Montreal all right, and was in communication with Dr. Gadbois, of the Canadian Athletic Club, as late as 7 o’clock in the evening. At 7:45 Luttbeg left his hotel in the downtown district to board a street car for the park. A bell boy at the hotel escorted him to the car; information as to his movements ends there.
Up to Midnight the club had had no explanation from Luttbeg as to his failure to appear.
So many made for the exits after the main bout was declared off that few were left to see the Tremblay-Richard go, and it was finally declared off." - The Gazette
