"Mr. Alfred Moul, the Alhambra general manager, has secured a couple of Turkish wrestlers, Adalli and Jassar, said to be invincible in their owwn country, who will come to us prepared to try conclusions with all comers. Their powers will be contested nightly at the Alhambra by champions of various nationalities, and if only a Greek can be persuaded to meet a Turk, we may expect only only the proverbial tug of war, but some sort of revival of the Olympian games. Already some half-dozen foreign lutteurs have arranged to try conclusions with the Turks.
The Turkish wrestlers were to have given an exhibition of their prowess to the Press at the Alhambra on Friday afternoon, at three o'clock; but the management had ot recall the invitation and postpone the date of the first performance, which is probable will be given on the 27th inst.
Wrestling on the stage by foreign adepts in the Graeco-Roman method is by no means new to the variety stage. Some four or five years since Antonio Pierri, a reoubtable Greek, and Create, a Frenchman, gave exhibitions of their skill at the Canterbury and Paragon; and it was only four months ago that Pierri met Fournier, the well-known French wrestler, at the Palace, Manachester. One of the most celebrated continental champions is Eberle, a German; and Pierre Pons, a gigantic Frenchman, who wrestled with Tom Cannon in Paris, is particularly skilled.

"The Alhambra promises a pair of Imperial Turkish wrestlers from Constantinople, in whose drawing powers Mr. Moul has evidently implicit reliance. There is to be a "private view" of them to-morrow afternoon. There seems a deeply laid intention to foist a wrestling boom upon the willing music-hall public. For we hear rumours of a 'terrible Greek' (why not a frantic Armenian?) who is anxious to do battle with those redoubtable Turks. Also the Oxford has engaged a wrestling coon for Whitsuntide, and even from the far South London wrestling champions are, we hear, to issue challenges. Of the success of this 'boom' we are not profoundly confident. Had Londoners the love and knowledge of the sport which prevails in Devonshire and Cornwall, in Lancashire and Westmoreland, it would be very different. But the cockney knows little or nothing wrestling. He learns to appreciate, more or loess, the noble art of fisticuffs, and following his Queensbury Rules has no toleration for the wrestling which in the old days of the ring formed almost as important a part of a combat as the boxing itself. The amateur of the sport, moreover, is bothered by the different styles that prevail. There is the classical 'Graeco-Roman,' and a half a dozen others, each with its own rules and prohibitions." - Pall Mall Gazette

"It is apparently one thing to engage imperial Turkish wrestlers and quite another to be able to get them out of their country, as Mr. Alfred Moul at the Alhambra has found to his cost these past few days. At length, however, all difficulties have been overcome, Turkish officials have been persuaded, after much delay, to grant passports, and the wrestlers leave Turk for London armed with special Government permits, countersigned by ministers and consuls who have all had to be interviewed and satisfied before these redoubtable athletes could be permitted to cross the Turkish frontier. Mr. Moul has received a telegrapm that everything is at last arranged, and that Adalli and Jassar are on their way to London, Antonio Pierri, better known under his sobriquet of 'the Terrible Greek,' will be one of the foreign champions to measure his strength against the Turks. The wrestling contests will commence Wednesday." - London Era

"The wrestling 'boom' has caught on the Alhambra, as may be gathered from the fact that the Empire has put on a burlesque of it. The turn comes very late in the programme, but is waited for by the larger portion of the crowded audiences which are happily now the rule at the larger Leicester-square house. In all six wrestlers take part, each of the three bouts lasting ten minutes, provided there be no fall. The mode adopted is the classical one; there is no throwing with the legs, nor is it allowed to take hold below the belt. Consequently the bouts are inclined to be long, and there is much sparring about for an opening. To secure a fall the back of both shoulders and a hip must be forced on the ground simultaneously; consequently the all-four position as the best means of defence is most frequently resported to. The two Turks seems the most skilful in the sport, although they do not appear to be the hevaiest. The others are a Bulgarian, a Spaniard, and two Frenchman. All are agile as cats despire an unwieldly appearence of muscular flesh. Their cunning feints and amazing nimbleness attract abundance of applause, and when a fall seems imminent the majority of the audience show their interest by rising to their feet. We confess that we do not care for boxing on the music-hall stage, and for more reasons than one. But the wrestling at the Alhambra is both interesting and amusing, has no repulsive features whatever, and by far the greater portion of it seems absolutely genuine, each man doing his level, and often upside-down, best to worst his antagonist." - Pall Mall Gazette

"The wrestling that is done usually on the stage may be honestly conducted, but sometimes it is not. Say that the wrestlers to give a show, it is generally arranged that a little outside competition is introduced, and thne it becomes necessary to be artful. The manager does not want his 'show' to be humiliated, so that he gives the otuside contestant to understand that if he tries conclusions with his 'star' he must consent to go down." - London and Provincial Entr'acte

"During the present week the patrons of this establishment have had several novel 'turns' submitted to them. One of these is supplied by Messrs. Barello and Millay, who, garbed as clowns, contribute what may be regarded as a caricature of the wrestling exhibition submitted at an adjacent place of entertainment. Whether their antics be or be not satirical in intent, they are unquestionably diverting, and arouse much laughter." - London Morning Post

"Music-Hall Notes.
At present, despite the return of a number of popular favourites to the London halls, the Whitsuntide programmes are not especially inspiriting. For these favorites are chary of losing any of their popularity by trying new songs on holiday audiences, and prefer to trot out the succcesses of last season in London. This is especially true of the three syndicate halls, although at each of these there are exceptions. At, moreover, the Alhambra, Empire, and Palace, althought the programmes contain several new numbers, the staple attractions remain as they were before the present week. At the bigger Leicester-square house the wrestling boom has caught on much more strongly than we anticipated, and the addition this week of some bouts in the English as opposed to the classical style has strengthened the 'turn' considerably. Antonio Pierri, known as 'the Terrible Greek,' has also been engaged, but so far as an amateur can judge it seems as thought his antagonists do not find him so terrible after all. We fancy that the two Turks come first os far as skill is concerned, but that Petroff, the Bulgarian champion, with his greater weight, is really the pick of the ten or twelve competitors." - Pall Mall Gazette

AUGUST 1895
AUGUST 7, 1895 (WEDNESDAY)
London, Greater London, England
"Directly I got to London I went to the Alhambra to see the new ballet and the wrestling. The ballet was delightful, and Grandpapa Jacob was radiant with smiles when I complimented him on his music. 'Titania' is a pastoral ballet-but not a Free Past-toral one. The wrestlers I saw from the wings, and I can quite understand the gigantic success which the 'turn' has secured. Frank Hinde, all smiles and shirt-front and finished elocution, before introducing the international gladiators, explained to me that he had some difficulty in carrying on a conversation with them all together in Turkish, Bulgarian, American, Lancashire, German and French; but the bouts were admirably contested, and each man tried his darndest to secure the fall. The great house shouted itself black in the face with excitement, and the Terrible Turk told me in confidence that he had never wrestled amid such enthusiasm in his life. He would like to wrestle the whole world, one down and another come on, on the stage of the Alhambra before he goes back to Constantinople." - Shields Daily Gazette

NOVEMBER 23, 1895 (SATURDAY)
London, Greater London, England
"The wrestling bout that came off on Thursday, the 14th inst., and in which M. Paul Pons, the French champion, and Memich, the unconquered Turk, were the contestants, was too genuine to be entertaining. For near upon three hours these two heroes were at each other, hip and thigh, but neither was credited with a fall. This could scarcely be called a 'variety' entertainment. The tussle seems to argue that most of the wrestling done at the music-hall, where perhaps two falls are recorded in a quarter of an hour, are none too bona-fide." - London & Provincial Entr'acte
