"Captain [Robert] Barclay [Allardice] whose pedestrian exertions have been so remarkable, is the lineal descendant of the celebrated Author of The Apology for the Quakers [Robert Barclay]. He is of a family remarkable for athletic exercise. His grandfather, Mr. [Robert] Barclay [4th Lair] of Urie, who represented Kincardinshire, used to walk every Session of Parliament from Scotland to London, and could perform the journey as soon as the ordinary stages of that time: but he frequently deviated from his direct road, in order to attend any fairs that happened to be held at the time. Dressed like a plain farmer, he mingled freely in all the rural sports usual at these meetings, particularly cudged-playing and wrestling, and won many a prize hat, in his progress to St. Stephen's Chapel." - London Times

MAY 1836
MAY 2, 1836 (MONDAY)
London, Greater London, England
"St. James's Day, May 1 - We are informed by Matthew Paris, an historian of considerable reputarion, that on this day the citizens of London were accustomed to make a public trial of their skill in the art of wrestling. The same writer says, that in the 6th year of Henry III., they held their "St. James-day" meeting near the Hospital of St. Matilda, at St. Giles's-in-the-fields, where they were met by the inhabitants of Westerminster, and a ram was appointed for the prize. The Londoners were victorious. This produced a challenge from the conquered party, which was readily accepted. In the midst of the viversion the bailiff of Westminster took occasion to quarrel with the Londoners, and a battle ensued, and many citizens were wounded. The unjustifiable petulance of the bailiff gave rise to a more serious tumult, and it was several days before peace could be restored." - London Times
