Jack Winrow
Jack Winrow was a legit Lancashire wrestling champion and sported a bonafide Lancashire trophy belt. He had won a heavyweight catch-as-catch-can tournament at Bury Circus on July 31, 1909, defeating Bob Berry in the final. Winrow took the first fall in eighteen minutes with a scissors hold. He lost the second to Berry in thirteen minutes. Berry “compelled Winrow to concede” with an arm hold according to the Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser on August 2, 1909. Winrow came back to win the third fall and the contest in fifteen minutes and thirty-five seconds. He was awarded a trophy belt and Berry received a silver cup. Third place went to Joe Owen who defeated Forrester Southern in the consolation bout. An 11 stone (154 pounds) competition was also held and went to Joe Evans. Winrow was from Heywood; Berry hailed from Wigan.
