"Barbados" Joe Walcott
This was originally posted in our Facebook Group as part of a series called Grappling With Color for Black History Month.
"The Barbados Demon" Joe Walcott, Born March 13, 1873 (his grave stone says 1872) in Demerara Guyana was a former World Welterweight Boxing Champion and noted as the greatest welterweight boxer (104 wins, 61 knockouts, 32 losses, 27 draws and 3 no contests) of all time by famed boxing journalist Nathaniel Stanley Fleischer.
But, did you know that Joe was also an accomplished amateur wrestler as well as a professional wrestler? During his time under Tom O' Rourke in Massachusetts "The Black Demon" would be noted as a man who would take on all comers!
Also did you know that Jersey Joe Walcott born Arnold Raymond Cream used the "Joe Walcott" name in honor of the original Barbados Joe Walcott. Funnily enough, Jersey Joe was also involved in Pro-wrestling.
He died on October 4, 1935.
I don't have any footage of the Barbados Demon in wrestling action, but I do have a clip of him talking about his fight against Joe Choynski in 1900. The clip is from 1932 and its very emotional as he was a cleaner at the original Madison Square Garden.
