Cliff Maupin
On October 11, 1967 Cliff Maupin passed away. He was born just before the turn of the century and not much seems to be known about his wrestling career, but it would appear was never much of draw or ever went anywhere.
As a promoter though he was successful and had a working relationship with Al Haft, the big dog in Ohio, where Maupin could run shows out of Toledo. He bought the promotion in the late 1930's from Johnny Herley's wife. She had attempted to run the promotion before selling due to Herley's tragic death in a car accident.
Maupin would promote there up until 1960 under the NWA banner, he also had a good working relationship with notorious promoter Jack Pfefer for a few years. Not only is he credited with helping get Rip Hawk's career among many others started. His biggest claim to fame comes from the Toledo Blade newspaper.
In his obituary they credit him with being the person who first billed George Wagner as Gorgeous George and that it was even Maupin's suggestion to dye his hair blonde and wear it long. They also note how he was known for his showmanship, which raises a question of why didn't he make it whilst wrestling?
