"The Official WWF Fan Club"
#PWHS #Article #Official #WWFFanClub
It's funny the things you remember from your childhood. For example a blue cassette tape box with a white tape inside of it. I remember it because it had I'll Be Your Hero on it. For some unknown reason, even though I was never keen on Lex Luger, I bloody loved that song.
To this day I have the urge to, and sometimes do just walk up to someone and simply recite: "I wanna be a hero. I'll be your hero. I'll be your hero. I'll be your hero. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Yeah. I'll be your hero."
The other song I distinctly remember being featured was the Mr. Perfect theme. I hated that. It was just so boring and pompous sounding. In hindsight I dare say it was the perfect theme. When I recently managed to find the tape track listing, seeing "25 Gallon Gallop" instantaneously started guns going off in my head. Again for some unknown reason I absolutely adored that generic sounding Smoking Gunns theme.
What bewildered me though was how I had no recollection of being a WWF Fan Club member. Which it looked like you had to be to get the tape I had: "The WWF Fan Club: Exclusive Music Cassette of World Wrestling Federation Superstars' Theme Music (1994)." It's actually commonly referred to as: "The WWF Fan Club Cassette: Volume V."
Frankly I would have sworn I had no idea there was one. So, I started looking into this fan club. Very little actually came up in various Google searches, so I decided to just plow on through the various WWF publications I have. You know, magazines, programs, and etc.
"The Official WWF Fan Club" started back in 1987. It's initial run lasted until 1995. In 1996 it was changed to the "WWF Clubhouse." Which rather amusingly has the picture of children in ring like treehouse accompanied by something to the effects of, "the first 10,000 members get free tattoos."
1996 was of course a pivotal year for the WWF with the 3:16 promo. The first volume of Mankind versus The Undertaker. The Iron Man match. Scott Hall and Kevin Nash leaving, and so on. I think the "Clubhouse" being introduced certainly shows the "attitude" they had at the beginning of the year. Raunchy, edgy and fresh are three things their "attitude" most definitely was not.
"But, they give tattoos to the first 10,000 members." That they did. Something tells me they did not, or if they did, they were transferable ones. Plus, advertising tattoos at children, who in the picture are clearly not of legal tattoo getting age, is a terribly misguided attempt at being "cool." An epic fail which marked the end of the original run of the "Official WWF Fan Club" / "Clubhouse" format as far as I can tell.
A ten year run is not bad. There was some really good benefits for being a member too. Such as being eligible for a free ticket to a WWF live event, discount coupons, and, back to where we started, the "exclusive" cassette tapes featuring your favorite WWF Superstars' theme music.
And below are all of the details contained on the advertisements pictured, plus the track listing of all the cassette tapes:

Along my journey I discovered the tape I had from being a "WWF Fan Club" member in 1994 was the only one to be advertised separately in the 1995 WWF merchandise catalog. Maybe the others were sold individually too, but I could not find an advertisement for them. So, I probably was never a member of the "WWF Fan Club" and my mum most likely just got me the tape as she did other music releases by the WWF.
In 1996 there was no tape released as Full Metal the album came out.
In 1993 Wrestlemania: The Album came out, however, it was only released in the UK, Germany and maybe a few other select European countries initially.
