Nevermind The Piledriver, Here's The Slam Jam
Simon Cowell's Theory, Copyright Chaos and the Evolution of Wrestling Music
#PWHS #Article #NevermindThePileDriver #HeresTheSlamJam #Music

This started off as a single paragraph for a Facebook post. I found myself getting drawn in by all the twists, turns, all leading to unusual bits of information. Many hours have been lost researching this to try and get it as accurate as possible. I hope you find this article as interesting as I did researching it. Starting with a tape from my childhood put out by Coca Cola; to the Simon Cowell theory; to the legality issues with WWF, WCW and Jimmy Papa; and maybe the best part of all, feeling the nostalgia of the songs from wrestling albums post-Rock 'N' Wrestling, but pre-New Generation.
Throughout 1990s Coca Cola were quite well known for their giveaways which could be won by buying a lucky bottle or can of their products. They had done similar stuff before then and still do to this day. During the first half of the '90s some of their most popular ones were the music compilations containing the biggest hits of the time. It was in America where they made their first cassette tapes for 1992. This initial comp. had 20,000,000 units produced.
I can not imagine that these would be highly valuable given that so many were made and all the songs featured were released on various other releases anyway. However, they never repeated track listings. So, the first tape released for the UK in 1993 had a totally different track listing to any other tape released around the same time anywhere else in the world. The fact that they catered each release to the specific audience at hand is not only good business marketing, but just a pretty cool thing, after all they were free giveaway items that could easily have consisted of the 10 most internationally known songs at the time reproduced for each country.
99.99% of these tapes (and etc.) are totally irrelevant to this website. But, one. One tape that I happen to have won, well, as I was 4 or 5 at the time my mom most likely was the winner. Her tape was first made available in the UK during late 1993 and the offer was pushed into early 1994. Although I vividly remember in my mind's eye playing the last track on side 2 of the tape over-and-over, I don't remember the exact time-frame in which she gave me the tape, but I think it was around Wrestlemania X.
The original tape, which I still have, was distributed in the UK by Telstar Mustic Ltd., but later in the year Coca Cola came to an arrangement with Sony Music Entertainment and re-printed "Coca Cola is the Music." That edition had an entirely different track listing, actually said volume one on the cover, was released on cassette and on CD, but it was similarly colored to the original. Off the back of the new volume one which was released in late 1993, another four (at least) volumes were made. Because of this, the one I own is not so well known.
So, if you can't read the track listing in the picture featured at the top it says:

I'm actually not sure if I knew there was a single available at any point. I think I only knew it to be on that cassette. Believing that, I have to also imagine I had no idea there was a WrestleMania album out in the UK too. I have no recollection of that at all. However, I do remember I also had the vinyl for another single which was released off of it, USA, featuring "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan. Listening to it as an adult I have no idea why I liked the USA song. I know I never had the first single to be released, Slam Jam, I was never keen on that song, even though it is essentially the same format and not too dissimilarity arranged musically.
As far as I can tell none of the three singles which were released in the UK and possibly other parts of Europe, were never released in America. Which means the song USA, which humorously entered the top 100 singles chart in the UK did not even see the light of day in America beyond it's appearance on WWE programming and the album.
Here is a breakdown of how the Wrestlemania album and the three singles did in the UK:

I think it is extremely telling that it was Wrestlemania (single) and not Slam Jam that made it onto the Coca Cola compilation tape. Even though it did not chart as high as Slam Jam, it certainly did well and really did have some stiff competition as you saw above. I'm not sure how many units of each single were shipped, but for Wrestlemania to be the only song included on any Coca Cola released tape or CD in the world, says something about it's popularity. Well, it's popularity in the UK at least as that was the only country to be able to get it.
What I found really interesting was the line-up of musicians, producers and etc. involved in the making of the album in the first place. According to his autobiography, Simon Cowell was the man behind the album. He had seen the success of football related songs and other similar crossover acts and theorized that any kind of popular television product should be able to make a one-off album and make a considerable success of it, even with little talent.
Cowell says that he approached Vince McMahon Jr. with the idea and after fending off pleas by other members of the BMG Eurodisc Ltd. music label, Cowell and McMahon made the album. Cowell was right in his theory and has since pretty much made a career off of it with a string of celebrity albums and the more recent shows like X Factor, Pop Idol and so on have been continuing to prove his point.
It was Wrestlemania the album that was his guinea pig, and to say it survived the tests would be in an understatement. As you could see above, it pretty much thrived peaking at number 10 in the UK charts. The original print of the record sold a very impressive 1.5 million unites. That is well over the requirement for platinum status from the UK sales alone.
Due to it being made by Simon Cowell and recorded in the PWL studios in London and Manchester, UK, it is now apparent why it was initially released in the UK with the European line following shortly afterward. With the American release coming later in the year via RCA records which had been sold to Sony in 1991. Remember how the original "Coca Cola is the Music" tape was on Telstar Music and then abandoned due to Coca Cola aligning with Sony? Just saying.
Just to note in Germany one batch of the Wrestlemania album was released under the Arista label which by the time had been merged into RCA for many years.

Quite a list of important names are included in the above listing. It's no wonder they made a success of it. Some of the songs are not brilliant at all, I can only imagine what could have been if money had been spared in the production of this album. There are some very catchy and well made songs in there too though. The one by Randy Savage and Wrestlemania probably being at the very top of my list of great songs.
There were as mentioned different versions of the album, and the singles made and I will list all of them lower down the page, but for now I want to give you the biggest track listing of any of the versions. So, you can see who performed on each song and exactly what was released.

I can't help but wonder if Simon Cowell knew about the earlier UK release through a subdivision of Sony Music called Epic Records. According to Roddy Piper he met Freya Miller in 1990 ad she had promised to get him work unrelated to wrestling. Miller lived up to her word in the fall of 1992. Roddy was over for the huge Summerslam event at Wembley Stadium in London, UK. She had arranged for him to record an album outside of the WWF's umbrella.
It was only released in the UK on a 7 inch pressing.

Following the success of the WWF Wrestlemania release, BMG Eurodisc Ltd. contacted Hulk Hogan's people and together they agreed upon a single which was to be released on December 13, 1993. It was a cover of an old Gary Glitter (less said about him the better) song and it was received reasonably well by the UK audience. Again, this was not released in America, but unlike Roddy's single, it did receive a wider European release on CD following the initial 7'' UK one.

Reaching number 25 at it's peak Hulk's initial release outside of the WWF was nothing to be laughed at. It was advertised in the sleeve that an album would be following. It was actually over a year until it surfaced and that was during Hulk's run in WCW. Hulk Rules was not only pressed in America, it actually made the charts. It did also do considerably well in Germany though under the name "American Made." Germany got a three track single released ahead of the album in 1994 too. I guess that was the testing pad to see if a full album should be completed or not.

Both the German single and album were put out through a subsidiary of EMI called Intercord, while in America, rather unsurprisingly, the album was released through the Warner Bros. Music Group's off-shoot Select Records. Bizarrely, this album actually appears never to have been released in the UK. Given the success of the earlier single, the success of the album in both Germany and America, it's just weird they could not work out a deal in the UK.
Also worth noting is that there were slight differences between the "American Made" and "Hulk Rules" albums. Most notably the titles of some tracks and more so the order of the tracks. As with the others, I'll put the alternate versions below. I've seen one or two places list Rick Derringer as singing "American Made", but it was actually Jimmy Hart. Derringer did appear on Les Paul's album "American Made, World Played" though, and of course he performed Hogan's WWF theme song, "Real American."
A final bit of information about this album is the song "Hulkster in Heaven" or "Hulk-A-Maniac in Heaven", the German title. Here is an excerpt from the album's linear notes:
"Music is not new to Hulk. He actually started as a bass player before he turned to professional wrestling. Hulk's return to music was inspired a few years ago by a very sad event: the death of a child in the United Kingdom who Hulk had visited while the child was still alive. This moved Hulk to write the ballad, "Hulkster in Heaven", and inspired him to work with Jimmy, JJ and Linda the members of the Wrestling Boot Band, to create an entire album."
And the opening lyrics to the song go:
"I read it in the papers, I saw it on TV.
I guess there'll be one empty seat,
When I wrestle at Wembley.
I used to tear my shirt,
But now you've torn my hearts."
I guess there'll be one empty seat,
When I wrestle at Wembley.
I used to tear my shirt,
But now you've torn my hearts."
The story goes that Hulk had invited the Make-A-Wish child to the show that night. When Hogan went out to wrestle and saw the seat was empty where the kid was supposed to be. Hogan found out when he got backstage that the kid had passed away before the match.
Hogan had toured with the WWF right before leaving the WWF for almost a decade. He'd lost the title to Yokozuna at the King of the Ring in June to end his on-screen role with the company, but he went out on an international tour as a farewell to the fans. Wembley refers to Wembley Stadium or Arena in London, UK, but Hogan had not wrestled at either one when the song was recorded. He'd of course been on many tours to the UK prior to this, but I think it must've been that final run in August of 1993 when he met the child.
We all know Hogan has the tendency to stretch the truth, such as mentioning Wembley. If he did meet the child at the London, Earls Court show in '93 the timeline would fit almost perfectly. Because "Hulkster in Heaven" was originally recorded in the fall of 1993 and released as "Hulkomaniac" on the Leader of the Gang single. That was released in December 1993 as mentioned previously.
Before we move on to the final item (that I can think of) connected to all of this, I just want to touch upon the idea of making an album without having deals with record labels in place.
Wrestlers had appeared on and/or released music prior to the 1990s. WWF famously released Piledriver and a couple of other records. Some wrestlers even made a little career out of it, see Sweet Daddy Siki. As the music industry moved forward with the technology available, it became easier to make, but more importantly, record and reproduce music. The stuff released prior to the 1990s were all pretty much novelty items. That's not to say the releases we've run through were not novelty items. They just became more available, produced more regularly, and proved to be fairly consistent sellers.
Musicians who had watched wrestling growing up wanted to get in on the act. Musicians who didn't understand wrestling wanted to get some rub off of the larger than life television stars too. These early-to-mid-'90s released really helped to cement the idea that the mid-'80s crossover popularity was still there and ready to be built into it's very own beast. With star-studded albums coming later for the WWF like "Full Metal" in 1996 and "Aggression" in 2000.
To get to that point, promoters and wrestlers a-like had to take what they could to knowingly, or not, test the waters in markets which wanted to release something by them. Just like how Simon Cowell contacted the WWF specifically for the UK market with the Wrestlemania album, and I'd imagine something similar happened in Germany with the Hulk album which got picked up in America afterward, like the Wrestlemania album had.
Even the Full Metal album released in 1996 was originally only scheduled to be available in Germany. The UK picked it up not long after that announcement though and the US eventually picked it up too. I believe after that one a multi-year deal was signed for music in America and from there the WWF (now WWE) music library just exploded. There have been nearly 30 release that I know of, if not more.

I'm sure after skimming through the track listing most of you either knew or have worked out it's some kind of album put out by World Championship Wrestling. It was only ever released in America and did not find it's way onto the charts. The label is cited as Grand Theft Records a division of Grand Theft Productions. GTR had actually been the label for Michael Hayes and all of the Fabulous Freebirds releases since their World Class Championship Wrestling days . As far as I can tell GTR never released music for anybody else.
As I'm sure you can imagine all kinds of legal hassle was caused by the this album coming out in 1992 (no exact date that I have found) and the later WWF release of Wrestlemania the album featuring Slam Jam. Just wild speculation here, but maybe that's why a release was held off on in America and why there never were any singles released there. Not to mention the further trouble caused when the WWF tried to start a new Saturday morning TV show on the USA Network called Slam Jam, which the song had been originally recorded for. Well, according to issues of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter from December 1992 and January 1993 say anyway. The show did debut on January 9, 1993 as WON predicted though, only it was called WWF Mania, the name WON gave in their January 4 edition.
As if that wasn't bad enough. If you skip forward 20 years to 2012 this very album. "The Original WCW Album" as the front cover describes it came around to bite the (by that time) WWE in the backside once again. Owner of GTR and GTP, Jimmy Papa, sued WWE over dispute in ownership of the songs featured on this album and his loss in royalties because of that.
WWE had to immediately cease using any song named by Papa and they edited out all of it in their video library. When WWE had purchased WCW, their music library had come with it, but an error was made resulting in WWE not realizing that these songs were still the partly the property of Jimmy Papa who also co-wrote all of the songs as well as produced the album. After a two year battle Papa and WWE came to a settlement with the details of the arrangement sealed. Since 2014 WWE have been free to re-add the music Papa had a hand in creating, but have not got around to updating all of their library just yet.
All of that happened in a five year period of time from 1990-1995. Without these experiments it's arguable if the WWE music library would be making them so much money today or would have over the years via the various CDs released and cross-promotional work with people like Marilyn Manson, Pitbull, Motley Crue, Flo Rida, Rob Zombie and so many others. When they were still in business WCW capitalized on it all too with the likes of KISS, Masta P and James Brown.
And don't get me wrong, the '80s with the Rock 'N' Wrestling Connection was very important to the success too. With guys like Willie Nelson and David Allen Coe appearing for JCP and we all know about Cyndi Lauper, Rick Derringer, Aretha Franklin and so on for the WWF. But, by the end of the '80s going into the '90s the hype was dwindling and it was clear wrestling was shrinking back into it's own little world again with less and less crossover appeal outside of scandal.
These projects gave hope for the WWF when they released Full Metal in 1996 and pretty much yearly releases thereafter. WCW on the other-hand not having proved their money making potential in the same way the WWF had limited to no success with their 1996 release called "Christmas Brawl." It had very limited availability in only Germany. By 1999 they sorted the game out and released the very popular "WCW Mayhem" CD.
Once the WWF got the deal either with or in receipt of the Full Metal album it allowed them to phase out the fan club tapes available to fan club members which had been their only way of schilling superstar entrance themes before then. A nice touch to the Full Metal Album is that the impressive line-up of musicians called themselves and are listed on the album as "Slam Jam."
I wish I could end it there as that was a perfect circle, but I promised you I would list all the versions of these albums and singles that I know, and I like to keep my promises. So, thank you for reading and here is that list:
