Chapter Two: Winston-Salem Unmasking
#PWHS #Article #WhatACard #WinstonSalemUnmasking

It was a humid August night in Winston-Salem Memorial Coliseum, August 5, 1971. Tickets started at $1 and you could get a ringside seat for only $3. It was another great Jim Crockett card that had the fans getting their money’s worth and more.
In the third match of the evening, the fans got an extra treat to witness the unmasking of the Masked Marvels. Les Thatcher and Sandy Scott (of the famous Scott Brothers) teamed together smoothly to defeat and help unmask the Marvels to reveal veterans Jim Starr and Billy Garrett.
These were the same two wrestlers many had known as the Interns in other territories. Story has it that Crockett did not want their manager Dr Ramey so they had donned the masks once again but in the Mid-Atlantic area be known as the Masked Marvels. Main event tag team in other territories, Starr and Garrett never really made it past mid-card status due to the depth of tag teams Crockett had become known for. (On a personal note, they more than held their own and I had wished they had been allowed a bigger push.)
Semi saw six top stars battling. Tag team George Becker and Johnny Weaver teamed this night with barefoot Argentina Apollo to defeat the three of the fiercest, rugged villains of Brute Bernard, Art Nelson, and Missouri Mauler (Larry Hamilton) when the Mauler could not get into the ring before the count-out. In the main event Danny Miller retained his "EASTERN HEAVYWEIGHT" belt against the cagey veteran that had one of the best names ever, Rip "the profile" Hawk in a two out of three fall match.
It was another great night and the kayfabe fans went home with a smile on their face and a memory for a lifetime.
