He reached the highest rank (I believe) in Sumo Wrestling, Yokozuna. He also competed in mixed martial arts. To pro-wrestling fans though he is probably most remembered for an infamous incident involving John 'Earthquake' Tenta.
In early 1991 for a Japanese promotion called Super World of Sports (SWS) Tenta & Koji met in a match. During the match Koji stopped selling for Tenta and would go on to shoot on Tenta.
Tenta did not back down though and the two circled each other and traded a few shots and attempted to grab hold of the other. It ended when Koji viciously kicked the referee who was trying to restore some order of normality into this extremely volatile situation.
The bell rang and Koji was disqualified. Outraged by the bell being sounded and Tenta being declared the winner, Koji then got on the microphone and started to make disparaging marks to the audience as well as telling them wrestling was fake.
